Overview
The Eve Energy is a smart plug that runs entirely on your local network. There's no Eve cloud involved in controlling it. Commands from Apple Home, shortcuts, and automations go directly to the device over Thread or Bluetooth, even if the internet is down.
It also measures actual power draw in watts and tracks energy consumption over time, which most smart plugs at this price either skip or hide behind a subscription.
Why I Recommend It
Most smart plugs at similar prices send every command through a manufacturer cloud server. That's fine until the company shuts down, changes their API, or their servers are slow. Eve processes commands locally, which means your automations work during internet outages and there's no latency added by a round trip to a data center.
Unlike Kasa or Tapo plugs that require their own apps for energy data, Eve's consumption history shows up natively in Apple Home with no extra software. If you're all-in on HomeKit, that integration is cleaner than anything else in this category.
Performance & Reliability
Switching response through Apple Home is near-instant because the command never leaves your network. Energy readings update every few seconds and are accurate enough to distinguish between a TV on standby and a TV actively displaying content.
Local processing means no cloud dependency and no subscription risk. The device continues to work and respond to commands even if Eve as a company ceased to exist tomorrow, as long as the hardware functions.
Thread connectivity requires a Thread border router. Without one, it falls back to Bluetooth, which has shorter range and slower response. Most Apple TV 4K and HomePod units act as Thread border routers automatically.
Setup & Installation
Scan the HomeKit code on the box, place the plug, done. Thread pairing is automatic if a border router is nearby. No Eve account is required for any functionality including energy history.
Value for the Money
Eve Energy costs noticeably more than basic WiFi plugs from Kasa or Govee. You're paying for local processing, energy monitoring without a subscription, and Thread support. For Apple Home users who care about reliability and privacy, the premium is justified.
If you're on Android or primarily use Google Home, look elsewhere. Eve is purpose-built for Apple's ecosystem and offers little outside of it.
