Overview
The Aqara Door and Window Sensor P2 is a Zigbee contact sensor that pairs with an Aqara hub. It reports open and closed states to whatever platform the hub connects to, whether that's Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, or Home Assistant.
It's small, the magnet gap tolerance is decent for older door frames that aren't perfectly aligned, and the battery typically lasts a year or more depending on how often the door opens.
Why I Recommend It
This is the Zigbee sibling of the Thread-native P2. If you already have an Aqara Zigbee hub, this sensor drops right into that network without any additional infrastructure. The Thread version requires a Thread border router and Matter controller. This version just needs the hub you already own.
Compared to Samsung SmartThings sensors or older Philips Hue sensors, Aqara's Zigbee devices tend to run on smaller batteries for longer periods. The P2 uses a CR2032 and manages power efficiently enough that replacement is typically once a year rather than twice.
Performance & Reliability
Response time through the Aqara hub to a controller like Apple Home or Home Assistant is typically under two seconds. Direct automations within the Aqara app itself run faster. For entry alerts and light triggers that's fast enough.
Zigbee range depends heavily on mesh density. In a home with several Aqara Zigbee devices, the sensor will hold its connection reliably. In a sparse network or with thick concrete walls between sensor and hub, range issues can cause missed events.
Aqara hubs receive firmware updates that occasionally change behavior in unexpected ways. Test after updates rather than assuming everything still works the same way.
Setup & Installation
Pair through the Aqara Home app by holding the reset button until the LED flashes, then follow the pairing prompt. Mount the sensor body on the frame and the magnet on the door or window. The whole process takes about three minutes per sensor.
Value for the Money
Zigbee contact sensors are the budget-friendly tier of the smart home sensor market, and the Aqara P2 sits at a reasonable price for what it does. If you're buying in bulk for a whole house, the per-unit cost stays manageable.
Factor in the hub cost if you don't already have one. The hub is a fixed cost that spreads across every Aqara Zigbee device you add afterward, which improves the per-sensor economics the more devices you run.
